God Bloggers' Head to National Conference

LA MIRADA, Calif. - What would Jesus blog? That and other pressing questions drew 135 Christians to Southern California this weekend for a national conference billed as the first-ever for "God bloggers," a growing community of online writers who exchange information and analyze current events from a Christian perspective.

The three-day conference at Biola University marked an important benchmark for Christian bloggers, who have worked behind the scenes for years to spread the Gospel and infuse politics with religion.

Topics included God bloggers' relationship with the traditional church, their growing influence on mainstream politics and how to manage outsiders' perceptions.

Some predicted bloggers could play a role in reforming the modern church by keeping televangelists and other high-profile Christian leaders honest.

Joe Carter, author of evangelicaloutpost.com., compared blogging to the 95 Theses posted by Martin Luther nearly 500 years ago that launched the Protestant Reformation.

"It's like putting 95 blogs out there," said Carter, who previously said God bloggers offer an "uncensored and unadulterated" view of contemporary Christian thought on politics and organized religion.

Many bloggers are now writing about religious oppression, poverty and world hunger, instead of hot-button issues such as abortion, homosexuality and assisted suicide, said the Rev. Andrew Jackson, a seminary professor and pastor at the Word of Grace Church in Mesa, Ariz.

"With blogging you tend to break out of those circles and you see other points of view," Carter said. "There's a bigger world out there than gay marriage and abortion."

At one well-attended workshop — "When Non-Christians Read Your Blog" — Biola University professor Timothy Muehlhoff gave instructions on writing about faith without alienating nonbelievers.

He stressed that God blogging has the potential to be a "train wreck" because done wrong it can reinforce stereotypes of evangelical Christians as angry and close-minded "pit bulls of the culture wars."

"As Christians today we are embroiled in the argument culture and we have forgotten this one thing: 'Blessed are the peacemakers.'," he said. "Wouldn't it be nice if we could say we brought a level of civility back to the conversation?"

Jackson, who blogs at smartchristian.com, said he wasn't as sure what long-term influence blogging would have on evangelical Christians — but he knew it would be important.

"We are just at the beginning of what is going on," he said. "We need to start thinking about how we can harness and focus the Christian blogosphere for greater impact."

A little bit about me

Hi my name is : Anthony, I'm 25 yrs. old I was born with what's called "Spina Bifida" it's a neurological disorder. An because of this I'm in a wheelchair, I've had 70 surgeries in my life and over eight hundred hospitalizations. I've died once one the operating table, I was gone for seven and a half hours, and God brought me back to life !!you might say that's impossable, well I'm here to tell you nothing is to hard for God! I know one thing no one can ever tell me that God don't still raise the dead!! I also thank God for the talent he has given me, I am a Calligrapher of seventeen yrs. I have been studying, and doing Calligraphy since I was eight years old. I thank God everyday for all the things he has given me, I truly am blessed!!!!

Well I'm back, I just got out of the hospital, this saturday. I just had my seventy first surgery. I know its alot of surgeries but when ever I feel like I can't deal with life anymore , God just brings me back to this scripture. It says: I can do ALL things through Christ, who strengtheneth me. Philippians 4:13

About Spina Bifida

Over 250,000 Americans are in the Spina Bifida Community. An estimated 70,000 people in the United States are currently living with spina bifida, the most common permanently disabling birth defect. Spina Bifida is a neural tube defect that happens in the first month of pregnancy when the spinal column doesnât close completely. There are 60 million women at risk of having a baby born with Spina Bifida. Everyday, an average of 8 babies are affected by Spina Bifida or a similar birth defect of the brain and spine. Each year, about 3,000 pregnancies are affected by these birth defects.

The Challenges of Spina Bifida

Up to 90 percent of children with the worst form of Spina Bifida have hydrocephalus (fluid on the brain) and must have surgery to insert a âshuntâ that helps drain the fluidâthe shunt stays in place for the lifetime of the person. Other conditions include full or partial paralysis, bladder and bowel control difficulties, learning disabilities, depression, latex allergy and social and sexual issues.

Thanks to new medical treatments and technology, most people born with Spina Bifida can expect to live a normal life. People with Spina Bifida have many special challenges because of their birth defect, but their condition does not define who they are. People with Spina Bifida have careers, get married and have children just like people who donât have Spina Bifida.

The enormous building along Bradshaw Road has been mistaken for a Home Depot by curious motorists.

But it's not another big-box store setting up shop in Elk Grove. It's the future home of The Rock Church.

The 94,000-square-foot building, built on 25 acres near Bradshaw and Calvine roads, looms over The Rock's current home next door. The congregation has outgrown the church it moved into in 1985.

"A building this size is a work in progress," the Rev. Myles Young said of the new church. "It's overwhelming at times."

Young said it is hoped the $9.2 million facility will be finished by November, so its first service could take place the Sunday after Thanksgiving.

When completed, the modern facility will have administrative offices, a coffee shop, bookstore, prayer room, recording studio, Sunday school and a state-of-the-art classroom that will serve as a satellite site of Patten University. The sanctuary will have 2,500 seats, with the ability to expand to 5,000 - making it one of the largest churches in the Sacramento region.

Adventure Christian Church in Roseville seats 3,000, while Capital Christian Center in Sacramento holds 2,700. The seating capacity for Trinity Life Center in Sacramento is 2,400.

Young said attendance at The Rock Church, a nondenominational Pentecostal church, has grown to 1,400, and that trend is expected to continue. During Sunday services, the current church can hold up to 1,000 people if metal chairs are set up.

"There's no room to sit right now," said Matt Gordon of Elk Grove, a 16-year church member who is the on-site construction manager for the new facility.

The Rock Church, which began in West Sacramento 25 years ago, has been in its current location for 20 years. Seven portables sit behind the existing building.

Young said the average age of its members is younger than 40, with most coming from Elk Grove, Sacramento, and Rancho Cordova.

Young, who served as a youth pastor at The Rock Church 15 years ago, remembers when attendance was only about 300 and pastures surrounded the church.

"There was nothing out here," he said.

The church's new facility is the culmination of seven years of planning. Construction started in May 2004, Young said.

Even after the move to the new building, Young said the church will continue to have branch ministries in areas such as Del Paso Heights, Sacramento and Rancho Cordova.

Within a year after the move, Young said the church's former building will be converted into a multipurpose room and youth center so that all youth-related ministries will be based there. Plans also call for a Spanish-speaking service to be offered there, he said.

Gordon, who was part of an initial design committee for the church's new facility, said it has been fulfilling to be involved in the project from design to construction.

"It's overdue," he said. "We've needed a building for too long."

Some of his most profound truths were unveiled in these simple “life lessons” by revealing their deeper, divine significance and relating them to every age, era and individual to which they were addressed.

So, it must have sounded somewhat strange, even aloof when Jesus began to speak to his closest followers about certain spiritual events, even about the fulfilling of prophesies soon to unfold, but without a common, routine event to equate these “unordinary” teachings to, they were perhaps, confused and bewildered; yet nonetheless- obedient. Factor in the sense of loss and hopelessness that each believer most certainly felt at the reality of his death, burial, resurrection and eventual departure from their ranks- and you have the prime elements that constitute a potential, dire situation. Yet, though despondent and in despair, they remained his disciples and did as he commanded.

History is replete with the awe-inspiring accounts of
real-life, every day hero’s, whose feats are forever
forged in our memories and whose exploits live on in
our thoughts. Their names still ring like anthems in
our ears and their life stories are the stuff that
legends are made of…

They are the Dwight D. Eisenhower’s among us who, as
the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces, led the
way to victory and freed the world of Nazism and
tyranny. They are the Martin Luther King Juniors among
us who envisioned an America without prejudice and
inspired a generation to be free of racism. They are
the John F. Kennedy’s among us who as President of the
United States of America, stood down the eminent
threat of a nuclear crisis, pushed back the enemy to
his borders and finally, challenged the nation to lead
the world in space exploration.

They are the soldiers fulfilling their duty, honoring
their country, sacrificing for the freedoms we so now
enjoy. They are the Richard Collins among us, who as a Sniper Spcl
with the 3rd Infantry-21st Battlion, US Army, is now fighting for a
free Iraq and to create a Democracy where peace can
reside, progress can begin and stability in the region
can endure.

Who, leaving his faithful wife, Angela and his two
beautiful children, Dakota and Montana, ages 3 and 4, behind, performed his duty to
country sacrificially, yet wholeheartedly so that an
impoverished people may know freedom without fear.
Who, during the return from a Stryker convoy mission,
that had been engaged in a fierce firefight with insurgents, was unexpectly struck
by a suicide bomb that blew him out of the Stryker and left him flash burned, battered, bleeding, and unconscious. Since he was defending the Stryker in the vulnerable position on the rear hatch, he was exposed directly to the explosion, and consequently, the one in his unit who suffered the most injuries.

People like Richard Collins are the real hero’s among
us whose suffering speaks of sacrificial duty and
whose injuries remind us again of the price of
freedom, but nonetheless, that the cause for freedom
is worth every cost, even if it meant his life. He was
willing to offer himself to God, country and to his
fellow man so that they too, might come to know those
things we hold dear.

The Richard Collins among us are the soldiers, whose
life story inspires generations and from which legends
are born. Their dutiful exploits are forever forged in
the forefront of our thoughts and their sacrifices
will never be forgotten…

Heaven’s agenda revealed its intent among the affairs of men once again as numerous were filled with the Holy Ghost and baptized in Jesus name at The Rock Church here in Elk Grove, California. Though the outpouring of the Holy Ghost should be nothing new to the Pentecostal, it is not always commonplace among certain, Pentecostal circles. Such is not the case at The Rock Church! Every service, people are filled with the Holy Ghost and miracles of healings, along with tongues and interpretation are so regular and ongoing that it literally patterns God’s template for a book of Acts church!

It’s Better Up Here In Gold Country!

Above the sullen, gray skies and dry, dusty topography of the Sacramento valley, the quaint and cozy town of Jackson is a refreshing rest-stop for the city-weary seeking treasures of tranquility and new beginnings. With old country charm and high country, panoramic views, residents and visitors of Jackson all agree- “It’s better in gold country!”
In bygone gold rush days, Jackson was simply known as “The Bottles”, so aptly named as a rest-stop, watering hole of sorts for prospectors weary of the troublesome trek through the treacherous Sierra Nevada Mountains. It is here in Jackson, where sojourners could be refreshed and revived by the mild climate, fresh-water streams and pleasant terrain. Gold country, to those seekers of treasure, became more than a resting place, it became a way of life from which their quest was rewarded and destiny was reborn.

In these, the last days, people are looking for reality… not only from God, but also from people. In order to facilitate reality we must view relationships from God’s perspective. This sound’s easier than it really is. The culture that we are all apart of has afforded us great conveniences, and also… great disillusionment. The Lord’s greatest warning about these last days was to warn us repeatedly against being “deceived”. The cacophony of voices that are vying for man’s attention are increasing in number and volume. When people begin to search for religious reality, they look for something that is relative to their present lifestyle… not knowing any different. The fact of the matter is this: God’s Word was originally designed to initiate total transformation! What we have today is the changing of God’s Word to adapt to a 21st century culture. Nothing could move us further from the reality we all desperately seek.

Cornerstone is dedicated to maintaining the reality of God’s will and purposes for the world we are apart of. Only by pursuing with passion God’s tremendous plan for humanity and eternity can we truly represent all that heaven has for us. What a privilege! What a God! A brief history of
CORNERSTONE
Spokane Valley's Pentecostal Church

October 1993 God began to deal with my wife and I to start a church in Spokane. We had never been there before, so one month later we went to visit the city. While in our hotel room that night, God spoke to me and said “I am placing you here…”

We went back to where we were presently holding a revival in Oregon and called Bro. Clifford Barnett, the home missions director in Washington, and he sent the necessary paperwork. We applied to start a work and in February of 1994 we went before the district board who approved us to go to Spokane. In this large city/area of 500,000 we were the first oneness home missionaries to be approved to come here in 42 years!

We arrived in early May 1994, not knowing one person and we started looking for a place to hold services. We found a 700 sq. ft. office suite on the 2nd floor over a veterinary clinic in a “rough” part of Spokane Valley. God was already moving and on May 29 we had our very first service with 36 people in attendance.

In our first service Don Stinson, a man dying of cancer was released from Sacred Heart Hospital for 2 hrs. to attend service. He was filled with the Holy Ghost and was baptized the next day on the 7th floor of the hospital in a whirlpool tub! In the following months we baptized 8 members of his family and started moving into enemy territory!

We were quickly outgrowing our present location. After 5 months we had 50-60 people crammed into the office suite… we were afraid that the 2nd floor was going to collapse when we started every service! We started praying for a larger building and for our landlord to let us out of our lease. Within 2 weeks, we had found our 2nd facility. It was a 3500 sq. ft. commercial office suite previously used as a school of cosmetology. It was on the main road of Spokane Valley! It was just waiting to be converted into a Pentecostal Church! However, we still had a problem, our landlord wanted us to finish out our 1 year lease. That week two women walked in while we were cleaning the church and asked if they could lease the entire floor. Our landlord agreed to let them take over our portion of the floor. God had removed the obstacles so that we could move forward!!!

January 1, 1995, we moved into our new facility. Having church while we remodeled, the church worked together with excitement and unity until the job was completed 2 months later. Over the next 4 ½ years God blessed us. Our attendance in regular services went as high as 140 and an all time high of 172.

In February of 1999, God spoke to me while praying at the church and said, “He would provide our own building for us.” I was ready for some good news… my wife had just gone through major surgery and would be out of commission for months, and I had just rolled my vehicle on the interstate losing 40% vision in my left eye.

In April 1999, Bro. Mark Morgan was preaching here and in the middle of one of his messages he stopped and looked at me and said, “God is fixing to give you a building.”

In May of 1999 the realtor who leased us our very first office suite called and said, “Tomorrow a church is going up for sale.” It was the first church to be put up sale in Spokane Valley in at least 5 years. The next day we went to the Episcopalian church, it was archaic and the entire church was constructed of cinder block and had old linoleum on the floor, but through the eyes of faith we saw great potential!

We proposed an offer the same day and the church accepted it. This gave us 90 days to come up with $75,000 for a down payment. We also had to find a lender for the remaining $300,000. Miraculously, with a combination of old fashioned work and sacrifice, our church of 110 people came up with the money and we found a bank that would finance the rest! In September 1999, we moved in and we began remodeling between church services.

God has greatly blessed our efforts. Since moving into our very own facility, we have baptized 60 people in the Name of Jesus and seen them filled with the Holy Ghost!!!

We want to thank God and all the supportive brethren who believed in our dream! We are ecstatic about the future and we are already looking to see where the next building will be after this one is filled up!!!

1. WHY CHURCH?
A person alone cannot be a whole human without involvement with others. Human mental and spiritual health demands interaction.

2. ALONENESS VS. COMMUNITY
We may not agree with one another on everything. Nevertheless, we need one another, and we all need friends. We want to be your friend.
Yes, we’re a church, but hold on . . . reading about a church can be interesting whether or not you want to go to church, so read on! We want to be brief yet thorough. Perhaps we can answer some important questions.

3. WHAT IS A CHURCH?
A broad definition of church is simply a group of people who have become connected through a common interest and religious experience and gather to share, learn, and grow. These are people who have come to realize that there is a spiritual component to their lives that is unfulfilled by everyday pursuits of shelter, clothing, and physical security. They have realized that this untended spiritual area is actually at the core of their being. As a result, they have discovered that tending this personal spiritual core is the proper beginning place for giving meaning to every other aspect of life. The conclusion is that a person’s life consists not in the abundance of things owned. Things do have value, but only as they are correctly connected to this central core. Without the core, they lose their value. Thus, there is something more, something beyond the secular that causes this thirst for inward completeness.
People find these issues addressed in church. The degree to which they are addressed varies depending on the church. Unfortunately, some churches do not talk much about these things. Others speak of them only in generalities. Still others are more direct and seem to have a better grasp of things spiritual. Finally, there are those like The Rock Church that believe these issues are seminal; that is, they are of ultimate concern and must be confronted and addressed. This emphasis is placed not only on talking about things spiritual, but also experiencing them and living them on an ongoing basis.

An unpatched, months-old vulnerability in Microsoft's Internet Explorer is now even more dangerous, security firms reported Monday.

Danish security vendor Secunia warned that new exploits of an earlier series of vulnerabilities in IE now let hackers compromise Windows computers without any more work than enticing users to malicious Web sites.

In August and then again in October 2004, Secunia broadcast warnings of similar threats to IE, but at the latter date posted proof-of-concept code which required the user to actually drag and drop a file within the browser to be at risk. The exploits now in the wild, said Secunia and the SAN Institute's Internet Storm Center, are automated and require no user action except visiting a hacker-constructed site.

In response, Secunia upped its assessment of the vulnerability to "extremely critical,' its most dire warning.

The three vulnerabilities noted by Secunia affect Internet Explorer 6.x, including the version bundled with Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), the massive update from last October which was touted by Microsoft as a major security upgrade.

SAN Institute's Internet Storm Center confirmed the vulnerabilities, which "will allow remote code execution on a victim's system just by visiting the [malicious] site."

The Center said it had received e-mail with a link to such a site -- users would still have to be drawn to the site -- and noted that "as of now, there is no patch available."

Secunia has posted an online test that users can run to determine if their browser is vulnerable.

Until a patch is available, IE users should consider switching browsers, said Secunia, or disabling the "Drag and Drop or copy and paste files option in Internet Explorer. Microsoft has posted a document on its support site that explains the process.

"In 1998, Calvin Beisner, an associate professor of Interdisciplinary Studies at Covenant College, Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, wrote a booklet entitled Jesus Only Churches. While space and time limitations prevent a complete response to the little treatise, maybe it is now appropriate, some six years later, to at least revisit it and observe whether some of its predictions have come to pass and whether its statistical information was correct.

One of the first things of interest to me was also sure discouraging. I am speaking of the amount of detail which the author used to document how few Apostolics (he incorrectly calls them 'Jesus Only') remain in the world. Mr. Beisner goes to considerable length and repetition to define how miniscule and insignificant we are. He declares that there are some 1.4 million members worldwide. He then calculates the percentage of Pentecostals and Christians in general who are Apostolics, and he pointed out how small this figure is.

My first reaction to this was sadness. I had no idea that we were so nothing. I have always taken my ministry seriously as unto the Father. Consequently, it should come as no surprise that I was pretty depressed to discover what a no-account bunch we are. Being so insignificant, it seems out rarity would disqualify us from meriting anyone writing anything about us - either good or bad. We are hardly a trace on the scale of importance. Man, I hate that.

But then a question jumped into my mind. I mean, it was like, waving its arms and demanding to be answered. It was puzzling, with us being so infinitesimal that we hardly registered, why such an important man as Mr. Beisner, and such a prestigious firm as Zondervan Publishing, and such an apparently noted editor as Mr. Alan Gomes, Ph.D., (although I must admit, other than another little book Mr. Beisner wrote, I had never heard of either Mr. Beisner or Mr. Gomes or Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, Tennessee, for that matter), would, since they are folks of apparent national and maybe even international esteem, take the time to write such a carefully documented booklet about little 'ol us? Talk about a tempest in a teapot!

Newdow enlists allies, renews fight over pledge

After high court's rebuff, atheist is joined by 8 co-plaintiffs in lawsuit.

Michael Newdow, the Sacramento atheist who wants "under God" removed from the Pledge of Allegiance, relaunched his constitutional case Tuesday without the glitch that got it thrown out at the U.S. Supreme Court last year.

The high court obliterated Newdow's first case - and his victory in a federal appeals court - by ruling in June that he lacked "standing" to sue. He doesn't have primary custody of his daughter, whose daily exposure to the pledge in an Elk Grove public schoolroom was at the heart of the case. Therefore, said the justices, he had no right to sue on her behalf. The justices did not rule on the merits of Newdow's arguments.

This time around, Newdow is joined by eight co-plaintiffs - all custodial parents of children who are students in Northern California public school districts or the children themselves.

Alan Brownstein, a constitutional authority at the University of California, Davis, said, "Obviously, he's trying to circumvent the Supreme Court's ruling."

Newdow said his goal in the new case is to overcome the obstacle placed by the high court. "There is a case or controversy, and I'd like to have it addressed," he said.

But Brownstein said there will be other hurdles for Newdow v. Congress, which was filed in U.S. District Court in Sacramento and was assigned there to Senior U.S. District Judge Lawrence Karlton and Magistrate Judge Dale Drozd.

One is the sentiment to keep the pledge intact that was expressed by various Supreme Court justices in the last round.

Brownstein also mentioned the storm of criticism that was fired at the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals when it ruled in Newdow's favor in 2003. Brownstein said it would be legitimate for district and circuit judges to take the public outcry into account this time.

Once again, the emergency room physician and non-practicing attorney, whose skill in making his arguments to the high court won praise from the pros last year, is the plaintiffs' only lawyer.

Newdow said he'll file similar suits on behalf of families across the nation in the coming year. The next is planned for Texas, he said.

The rewritten case is based on the First Amendment's guarantee of official neutrality regarding religion, the 14th Amendment's equal protection clause, comparable provisions in the California Constitution and the federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act.

Except for Newdow, all of the plaintiffs are identified in the complaint by pseudonyms to protect them from possible retaliation.

Some of the children assert that they don't believe in God and have suffered harassment or ostracism for objecting to the pledge.

In an interview Tuesday, a parent of one of the child plaintiffs said the third-grader has been aware of the pledge issue since Newdow's last case was in the news.

The child remarked at the time, "That's not right," and became "quite activist about it," the parent said.

The complaint identifies the child as a pantheist who doesn't believe in a personal God.

Other children "can become quite nasty ... and I daresay they have," said the parent. "You shouldn't put the child in the position of being a public spectacle because of their perceived nonconformity."

The parent claims rights as a taxpayer to have the public schools maintain religious neutrality.

Some sections of the legal complaint echo the 9th Circuit's 2003 opinion.

The plaintiffs "are all adversely affected ... by the message (the children) receive vis-a-vis their parents' religious beliefs. They are told with each reci tation that their parents' religious choices are wrong. This is an injury both to the children and to the parents," the suit argues, citing fundamental rights of privacy and "parenthood."

Newdow's own daughter isn't listed in the new case, though her school district, Elk Grove Unified, the main defendant in last year's case, is named again. A couple called Jan and Pat Doe send their child to school there. All three are identified as atheists. Other plaintiffs are identified as agnostics.

Sandra Banning, the mother of Newdow's daughter, her principal legal custodian and an avowed Christian, said through a lawyer that she continues to support the pledge "as it is." The lawyer said Banning hadn't seen the legal complaint.

Newdow is asking for a broader ruling than the one granted by the 9th Circuit, which declared the pledge unconstitutional only in public school settings. As he did in the first case, Newdow requests a declaration that the 1954 federal law inserting "under God" in the pledge is unconstitutional, and an order to delete that phrase from the pledge in all official contexts.

The complaint also asks that California be ordered to change or repeal a state law that allows recitation of the pledge as currently written in public schoolrooms.

The complaint asks, too, for a ban on the current pledge in five school districts - Elk Grove Unified, Sacramento City Unified, Elverta Joint Elementary, Rio Linda Union and Lincoln Unified in Stockton.

Officials at the Sacramento and Stockton districts said they wanted to review the complaint before commenting.

Rio Linda Superintendent Frank Porter also declined to comment on specifics. He said the pledge is recited in the district at the start of every school day, but "individuals may choose not to participate for personal reasons."

Elk Grove Superintendent Steven Ladd said in a prepared statement that the district "will again proudly defend the right of willing students to recite the Pledge of Allegiance as they have for 50 years."

But Ladd said the district was disappointed that the case would consume time, energy and resources "that we could otherwise use on behalf of children."
